THISthreaduniverseya know, I came upon an interesting phenonmenon when I was in high school. I would warm up, do long tones, etc etc., but would never feel any more ready to play that before. The time when I did feel the most warmed up was in the middle of huge orchestral works. Now, here is the question, why? it's the air, as tuba players, I don't believe we need to do an excessive amount of long tones, but rather to focus on breathing. My reasoning behind this is, if we use more air, we can effectively use less lip. JPNirschl brings up an excellent point that Louis Armstrong didn't play a double high C as his first note, but if our air is flowing correctly, we can avoid using an aperture like that altogether. the only time nowadays when it feel like my lips hurt is when I go above a Bb on top of the staff (CC tuba), and even then, it's because I'm pushing on the mouthpiece (bad habit, working on it-I can actually play higher when I'm NOT pushing). The lips don't hurt if you have the proper airflow behind it. Arnold Jacobs is a great example of this, one of my teachers told me a story about Jacobs when he played his students tubas. His sound was noticeably flatter, sometimes by 25 cents, and it was because his air flow was so good that he didn't need to use his lips as much as us regular humans do (tighter lips-sharper). the only thing you would actually need to warm up lip wise would be to get some blood into the lips, but I personally don't believe that my lips gain any more blood after doing long tones....Happy BD
