My other thread exclusively had coverage of a narrow part of the southern metro, so this time I stayed away from there.First of all, here's a cool-looking aerial showing the western areas of Houston, with shadows of the high-rises along the highway. I just thought this looked cool. It's a bit big so I'll just thumbnail it.Now here's what those freeway-side skyscrapers look like from a bit closer-up. Some denser single-family development in western Houston. Not really sprawl, I just thought it looked nice. There was a pretty good amount of this in the western parts of the city.Compare that to some newer and more conventional sprawl.Close-up of houses in the above development.Here's where they shop. The little lake in this one is a neat little touch. And speaking of lakes, I became mildly obsessed with housing developments featuring lakes. There weren't really a lot of them, but they looked cool so I've included a disproportionate number of them in these pics. Close-up of houses in the above development. With palmetto trees. Really, really typical stuff that's had some time to mature.Beautiful, ain't it?There's factories in the sprawl, too.Bigger-lot stuff with more trees. At this point I think I started heading to the north suburbs. The ones prior to this were in the western suburbs.Office park.Typical older stuff.Lovely!Lots of trees. Check out the little boat on the canal. This was also in The Woodlands. You can see they make some effort to save some trees. I suppose that's how The Woodlands lives up to its name. Let's go for a swim!More McMansions along another lake.Neighborhood shopping center. I think I started to venture to the eastern suburbs starting with this pic.Older stuff. With straight streets!Hmmm. This was definitely in the eastern areas.This was pretty close to the pic immediately above.Shopping center and apartments, with more apartments coming soon.More lakeside stuff. I *think* I might have ventured back over to the western suburbs with this pic.Here's what makes Houston go.Shot of the port, just for the heck of it.I think this was the only pic I got that was located south of downtown.Back to the freeway-scrapers.Located near some freeway-scrapers.More freeway-scrapers.Trees. And swimming pools.Plenty of room for more.Mass quantities of houses. Mass quanties of apartments. Mass quantities of cars. And even mass quantities of RV's.Mass quantities of freeway-scrapers, too.Not to mention mass quantities of trailer parks. My obsession with lakeside development continues.It's interesting to see how much they use concrete for parking lots and roads around Houston, and how relatively little they use asphalt.Some junkier, older stuff. Sprawl? Or not sprawl?The obligatory Wal-Mart.Strange-looking apartments. I guess I saw some of this in my LA thread, too.More lakes.And still another mall.I like the way so many of these developments in Houston and Dallas have community swimming pools and tennis courts.Church, shopping center, and houses. What more do you need?
